    COURSE PURPOSE

    To develop in learners the ability to think originally in the field, to encourage learners to apply evidence from the ancient Near East to the task of writing Old Testament history, and to encourage learners to think critically about the leading scholars and perspectives in the field.

    Course Purpose: To develop the doctoral student's ability to summarize and formulate the range of options in Old Testament studies, including general and special introduction, Old Testament history, textual transmission, formation of the canon, critical approaches to Old Testament study, and the current state of Old Testament studies; to evaluate critically those options through a grid of biblical, theological, and historical criteria; and to engage in original biblical research, assessment, and construction.
